Have you felt inspired to do something in your job search

Have you felt inspired to do something in your job search This last weekend Ive been reflecting on feeling inspired to do things.  Specifically there are two things Ive been inspired to do that I will act on, but havent yet: Writing in a journal. In my church weve been taught to keep a journal, but as I get older I am learning all the reasons why this is an amazing exercise. I thought it was because we could leave a rich history to our kids and posterity, but there is additional benefit.  I have learned from a therapist that the exercise of journaling could have profound impacts on your brain, specifically your ability to recall, remember and concentrate.  Those are three things I would love to improve on, and if all it takes is some concentrated journaling, count me in! Practicing my oral Spanish. I practice Spanish a bit, but I really have felt inspired to read outloud for 30 minutes a day, in Spanish.  I know Ive lost a lot of my speaking ability, even though I do okay I want to get back to fluent, and back to sounding fluent I bet you have felt inspired to do something I have no idea what that something is. It could be something like calling someone on your chicken list.  It could be getting your finances in order and going through them to find a hole somewhere.  It could be getting a new shirt I dont know but I am guessing youve felt inspired to do something and have put it of. So heres my challenge/invitation to you. Today, write down what youve felt inspired to do.  This is simply a brain dump. Then, this week, start to work on that list.  Get it out of your head, then get it off the paper, and be done with it. You might benefit more than you could imagine by just doing it! The 10 Most Deadliest Jobs Sitting in an office 9-5 is an average day for most of the population. You wake up and have some coffee, sit down at your desk for 8 hours and then leave. You are relatively  safe sitting down all day behind a computer. However, not everyone has an office job. There are many people who are currently involved in a job that is physically dangerous and involves all sorts of heavy machinery and challenging risks. So what are these jobs and why are they so dangerous? This presentation by Code Red Safety reveals the 10 most deadliest jobs and what is involved in their daily routines: The 10 most deadliest jobs Loggers They work with heavy machinery and chainsaws, whilst working from  extreme heights. Loggers have a  total death rate of 91.3. Fisherman Working on a steel vessel is dangerous as it is moving against the ocean. The tools they use are sharp and can instantly injure a person. Aircraft Pilots There were a total of 63 deaths in 2013. High velocities and altitudes can be dangerous. Roofers There are 132, 700 jobs in Roofing. There were 69 total deaths in 2013 as Roofers work at dangerous heights in bad weather conditions. Recyclable Material Collectors Trucks have  poor safety for drivers, including their inability to see other vehicles on the road clearly. They have a death rate of 33. Mining Machine Operators They use extremely powerful equipment and machinery including having to deal with explosives. Truck Drivers Total deaths in 2013 were 748! With there being 1,585, 300 jobs in truck driving, this is a dangerous situation for workers to be in. The trucks hold a large amount of weight, whilst constantly being on the road in extreme weather conditions. Farmers and Ranchers There were 220 deaths in 2013, working with dirty soil and being in the way of large machinery is a hazard to these workers. Electrical Powerline Workers Deaths caused by electrocution and faulty cable systems. Construction Workers 215 deaths in 2013. 4 Ways to Support Good Mental Health in the Workplace Work is one of the main causes of mental health problems; One in three have experienced mental health problems at work with two-thirds of sufferers citing work as a contributing factor. This demonstrates the importance of work culture on our wellbeing, and the changes needed in the workplace to support those who are silently suffering. Mental health awareness has had a much-needed step-up, but power does not always come with awareness, there is still a course of action that needs to follow, and if the trickles of awareness have yet to see light in your workplace, then it’s time for change. 1. Let’s talk Despite the increase in mental health awareness, stigma is still entrenched in the workplace. Talking about mental health matters, through talking we can change how people think about mental health and how sufferers deal with it. Talking is important and enlightening, but talking can also be “awkward” in the face of a subject raw and personal to many, yet alien to some others. A truly open environment at work where employees can feel the confidence to talk about mental health is the mightiest sword against the ignorance and fear that prevents people from seeking the help they need. Fear is a great wall in the battle of mental illness; fear of isolation, fear of being judged, and the fear of intolerance. Employers should encourage positive rhetoric around mental health by openly talking about their experiences with mental health, and inspire employees to connect with each other by sharing their own stories and quirks around their mental health. This sends a strong message of togetherness, and shows mental illness as a normal human condition, not a sign of weakness. Mental illness can be isolating, and this loneliness can heighten illness, so let’s tackle mental illness together. 2. Promote a healthy work environment Our environment plays an important role on our mental health, and fostering healthy well-being at work can prevent problems from escalating. High levels of stress can exacerbate existing mental health problems, so tackling the causes of stress-related problems at work is an important step in prevention. Overworking, excessively exceeding working hours, and skipping break times can all add to stress levels. Employers should establish a healthy balance between work and personal life, avoiding anything that interferes with the boundaries between work and home. Healthy wellbeing benefits everyone at all levels, whether you suffer from mental health or not. 3. Identify mental health problems Feeling sad, stressed or confused is a normal part of life, but how do you know when it’s a mental health problem? Awareness and understanding is fundamental to identifying mental health. One in four people will suffer from mental health at one time in their life, but many suffer in silence due to the lack of insight into what they are experiencing. This failure to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental illness can lead to years of unnecessary suffering. If possible, employers should be observant of the early signs of mental illness, which can include: Problems with thinking  Memory, concentration or logical thought. Uncharacteristic behaviour. Drop in functioning  Difficulty performing familiar tasks. Mood swings. Illogical thinking  Odd beliefs and ideas. Social Withdrawal  Loss of interest in others. Lethargic  Loss of initiative to participate in any activity. Nervousness  Fear or suspiciousness of others. Strong feelings of anger. Shifts in sleep or appetite. Decline in personal care. Of course these signs can be invisible, and recognising a couple of these symptoms alone does not identify mental illness, however an alertness can be the important nudge towards help. Employers can also help workers to identify their mental health by encouraging workers to take a quick and confidential online screening. Following the questionnaire, participants will immediately receive their results. 4. Support those experiencing mental health problems. Employers are not qualified to give advice on mental illness, but understanding, listening, and engaging in effective conversation can help immeasurably. Mental illness is treatable and employers should support and encourage attempts to seek professional help a chat with the GP is a good start. This should be followed by allowing employees to attend therapy sessions and medical appointments in working hours if needed. Implementing policies that support mental health and treatment can ensure that workers find the help they need.

I screwed up yesterday. Woohoo! - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Yesterday I made a massive mistake that was both awkward, stupid and painful. I had a really important meeting with a large group of people from a client and somehow that meeting wasnt in my calendar. The meeting was at 1 oclock, which I found out when one of them called me at 1:05 to ask where I was. And this is not only a big client, this was the kick-off meeting for that project, and I forgot to go. I felt awful. But then I remembered my own advice about celebrating mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes at work. But rather than hide them and be embarassed, it is much better to celebrate your mistakes with others. So let me reframe that: WOOHOO I forgot a meeting. This is not to say that I take forgetting my commitments lightly or that I plan to miss more meetings. This is simply to say that mistakes are inevitable the key thing is to learn from your mistakes, so you dont have to make the same ones over and over. Instead, you can move on to make bigger and better mistakes. As Samuel Beckett put it: Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. I have rescheduled the meetings with the client who took it very nicely and I do plan to be there this time. I may even bring cake to celebrate my mistake :-) Got a mistake youd like to celebrate? Best reader feedback EVER! - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog A while back, I wrote a blog post about dealing with constant complainers. The main point is that offering possible solutions rarely works on inveterate complainers because theyre not really after suggestions theyre after empathy. Well, one reader tried it out, and found that well, read it for yourself: Holy Crap it works. My wife is a constant complainer and when ever I voice my opinion or offer a suggestion she gets mad. I literally used what was suggested in the article, I said, You know, that sounds terrible. I don?t know how you deal with all of these problems. She thought I was being super sweet and understanding to make a long story short, I got laid. It was worth the effort. Im still laughing about that one.
